What Microsoft 0365 Licences do you need for Teams Direct Routing?

Understanding what Licences are required to use Microsoft Teams as a phone system can be complex. Our short blog below summarises what Office365 licences are required to enable voice calling from Microsoft Teams.

In addition to the Microsoft licences below you will also need to buy a Microsoft Calling plan or use a Telecoms provider that offers Microsoft Teams Direct Routing such as Stream Networks.

Using a provider other than Microsoft for your calling plans can save significant costs against the Microsoft Plans. Stream Networks provide Teams Direct Routing plans including 5000 UK Geo Minutes to 01,02,03 numbers and 2000 minutes to UK mobiles per user per month. What o365 licences do you need to enable Teams Direct Routing?

In the table below we have highlighted the majority of o365 licences used by businesses.

For any O365 business basic, standard or premium licences

If using one of these licences above, you will need to add a Microsoft 365 Business Voice without Calling Plan licence per user (including the admin) to your Microsoft tenant (Microsoft SKU is BUSINESS_VOICE_DIRECTROUTING).

For any 0365 E1 or E3 Licence

For E1 and E3 licences listed above you will need the Microsoft standard Phone System licence (Microsoft SKU is MCOEV)

For any E5 O365 licence

You don’t need any additional Microsoft Phone System licences

Teams O365 licences for enabling Auto Attendants’ group phones etc

For an auto attendant or group feature you just need the Teams Virtual Licence which is free or a paid standard licence above.
